Next-Generation Wind Turbine Blade Design & Manufacture

The Challenge

A study into the cost drivers of wind-generated power identified a 'sweet spot' in blade length for a cost-optimised turbine solution. Analysis of the existing manufacturing process revealed that the boat-building methodology used to produce current blades was fundamentally unsuitable for blades in excess of 100 metres. A tender was issued to identify alternative design and manufacturing approaches capable of delivering blades beyond that target at commercial scale.

Our Approach

We managed the programme from contract award through to blade delivery, overseeing the engagement with Blade Dynamics as the selected technology partner. We governed the design and manufacture of a test blade and a set of three production blades intended for flight on a test turbine. The programme navigated the rapid growth of the Blade Dynamics business and resolved HSE alignment challenges arising from differences in US and UK regulatory approaches, maintaining delivery momentum throughout.

CCS Demonstration Programme Delivery

The Challenge

Carbon capture and storage was identified as a critical technology for the UK's decarbonisation pathway, yet no large-scale demonstration projects had been successfully delivered. A robust evidence base was needed to validate investment cases across multiple candidate sites and coordinate a complex landscape of government, industry, and academic stakeholders.

Our Approach

We led programme governance across four candidate CCS demonstration sites, managing technical due diligence workstreams, regulatory engagement with the Environment Agency and DECC, and the development of a national CCS infrastructure roadmap. Our PMO provided real-time portfolio visibility and risk management across a £1B+ investment landscape.

Isentropic Energy Storage Technology Demonstration

The Challenge

One of the key challenges associated with renewables technologies is managing the intermittency of wind and solar power. An open call for Energy Storage Technologies resulted in a contract with Isentropic to develop a 1.5MW/6MWh energy storage system using an advanced heat pump/engine combined with hot and cold thermal stores — a novel approach with no established precedent at this scale.

Our Approach

We provided programme management across the full development and demonstration lifecycle. The programme encountered significant challenges across engineering design, the engineering team, the management team, and the Isentropic Board — many stemming from a single individual with influence across all these bodies. This required sustained, proactive stakeholder management and ultimately led to the appointment of an independent Board representative to protect programme integrity. When the company subsequently entered administration, the governance position meant full ownership of all associated IP had been secured, which was then allocated to a University to ensure the technology's continued development.

Flettner Rotor Wind-Assisted Ship Propulsion Trial

The Challenge

Flettner rotors — large mechanical sails that harness the Magnus effect to generate thrust — offered significant potential for reducing fuel consumption in commercial shipping. However, no unbiased, full-scale operational data existed to de-risk the technology for shipping companies and private investors. The challenge was to design and deliver a rigorous real-world trial capable of generating the evidence base needed to unlock commercial investment.

Our Approach

We managed the programme from trial design through to data analysis, overseeing the installation of Flettner rotors on a commercial vessel and governing the full operational trial across extended voyages and varying sea conditions. The programme captured a comprehensive performance profile — including fuel consumption, emissions, rotor behaviour in adverse weather, and the operational impact on port manoeuvres — providing the shipping industry with the credible, independent evidence needed to make informed investment decisions.

High-Definition Set-Top Box Platform Portfolio

The Challenge

Delivering a competitive, multi-platform set-top box portfolio demanded simultaneous execution across four distinct product tiers — traditional DVB hardware, Android TV and OTT streaming devices, advanced regional operator deployments, and commercial 10M ultra-high-definition solutions. Each tier carried its own certification requirements, software integration complexity, and operator-specific customisation demands, all under intense commercial timelines and with major telecom partners expecting flawless delivery.

Our Approach

We led programme delivery across the full product portfolio, governing hardware platform development, software integration, and operator rollout workstreams in parallel. For traditional and hybrid DVB models — including cost-efficient HD HEVC devices built for satellite and cable operators — we managed Dolby Audio certification and custom UI/UX delivery. Across the Android TV and OTT streaming range, we oversaw Google certification, Chromecast integration, and 4K decoding validation. Regional operator programmes such as Austria's simpliTV simpliONE Box required close coordination between hardware, tailored software interfaces, and operator go-to-market teams. At the premium end, we managed the delivery of commercial 10M STB solutions deployed with major telecom partners including China Mobile, supporting ultra-high-definition cinematic streaming at scale.
